This is the one book to get to start seriously using your pi.I've gone through a few others. They're full of fluff.I've got bookmarks on pages for network connections, raspicam setup, serial interface. Every time I configure a new SD card I refer to those pages.Also great primer on Python programming, although I didn't look to closely at that, being a software developer already.Nice section on Linux, too. Could have gone slightly deeper, but that's just me. There's enough here to show you how to do a lot.A section on the GPIO is robust also. More on that later, as I haven't looked at that part too closely yet.

Reasonable, but for the original RPi versions ONLY - doesn't specifically cover the B+ nor anything of the RPi 2. If you are only looking for a intro type book, then this is ok, however you mostly likely would want/need to purchase something covering the later models.

Despite the other RPi guidebooks available, I specifically waited for Raspberry Pi Cookbook to become available. As someone who learned to code with an Arduino, I found O'Reilly's Arduino Cookbook a completely necessary aid for a coding noob like myself. My hope was that Simon Monk's book would match the quality of Arduino Cookbook.This book is written in a clear language and answers any and all questions you may have about getting started, programming in Python, or interfacing your RPi with other doodads. For that, I like it.I gave this book 4 stars because it did not have the same depth and initiative as the Arduino Cookbook. Several bits of the book have paragraphs that were robotically copied and pasted, and recipes so not go any further than answering the question in as minimal of a way. Though I have my own RPi projects planned, I was hoping this book would inspire some new ideas, which it has not.Bottom line, I recommend this book for someone who is foreign to RPi or just looking for a quick reference. Otherwise, I'd further research other RPi books or work through the online community.

Thought I was getting the about-to-be-released second edition. My bad, but really should have been stated more clearly (like Amazon does for most products) in the description.Still, Monk (as always) has delivered a great book here. If you're getting into the Pi (and if you're not, why?), this is a great book to have by your side. Not too big to use as a fly swatter and not too small to be useful for it's primary task of getting folks excited about the Pi. You are excited, right? Right?There ya go. Get this book - but get the second edition. I'm going to end up having both. Grrr.

The Raspberry Pi cookbook is the newbie who doesn't know too much en regards to linux or python. Other RPI startup guides do not go into the greater depth for using linux and python that is found here. This book does not provide the same usefulness as the Arduino Cookbook of this series, which covers hardware in greater depth. RPi is totally different beast than Arduino since it has no A/D, can't shunt/ supply much current, 3.3V and is much more easily breakable and less repairable. This book reflects the power of the RPi in software development, internet of things world. That said, this book does not teach OOP techniques well. After working with RPi and this book, I like the Arduino Uno, Arduino IDE and Arduino Cookbook, more!

This is a very complete up-to-date guide to just about everything that a Raspberry Pi user might need to know. I have most of the books that have been written about the Pi and this is definitely one of the very best (and most current). It also has a very complete Table of Contents (that covers 13+ pages (around 22 entries per page) on my iPad) and each entry is hyperlinked to the corresponding section in the book. The Table of Contents is located at the end of the book and so a couple of reviewers who either didn't look or were writing a review based only on a preview examination have erroneously claimed that the table is missing (it isn't !) and unfortunately they haven't corrected their mistakes or adjusted their review ratings. The book has many 5-star reviews from competent reviewers and that's certainly what it deserves.

Good - but for the original rPi versions - doesn't specifically cover the B+. If I could go back I would have rather looked for a manual that is a little newer.

Good basic book for using the Raspberry pi computer. It goes into very good detail and also has quite a few photos/illustrations to describe the information given. I recommend it for anyone who wants far more detailed information about the Raspberry pi.
